I had the same problem, but on the Windows platform.
Try to follow the guide "Update of SAP Systems Using Software Update Manager 1.0 SP16" and unpack SUM package to /usr/sap/<sid>
(section 5.2 Downloading and Unpacking the Software Update
Manager)
That solved the problem in my case.
